It doesn’t. It just lets people vent their righteous anger and frustration against someone, I guess. To be honest, I do enjoy the occasional argument on the internet, but there’s a big difference between doing it on an individual basis and recruiting an army of people to harass someone.

I’m sick of this mentality on tumblr that people have where anyone with a differing opinion from their own has to be reported to the internet police.

I just unfollowed a girl for doing exactly that. Apparently anyone who dares to defend Daniel Tosh’s rape joke on her dash is getting a screenshot of it sent to a “social justice blog”. It’s complete bullshit, and I’m not saying that because I have particularly strong feelings on Tosh’s comments one way or the other.

I have never seen a single one of those witch hunts achieve anything even remotely constructive. In fact, they often just trade one form of harassment for another. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched someone accused of making un-Pc comments being attacked by hypocritical assholes slinging equally un-Pc insults.

“Oh, she’s giving people shit because they’re black? Let’s give her shit because she’s fat.”

“Oh, he’s making fun of gay people? Well he lives in Texas and everyone down there is an ignorant fucking hick, anyway.”

Happens pretty much every time. Even when it doesn’t, it’s usually just a giant shouting match. Do you really think getting dozens of people to berate someone is going to solve the problem in any way? Do you really think that’s actually going to get the opposition to change their mind or to even listen? Of course not. You aren’t making a point, you’re getting a mob to bully and threaten someone because you don’t think they have the right to make theirs.

It’s bullshit, and to paraphrase the girl in question, if you pull that crap “I will unfollow you so fast your head will spin”. If I really want you to shut up, it’s all I need to do.

It is a critically acclaimed blockbuster. It should not be so fucking difficult to get them to go. They all bored out of their minds. This is not too much to ask.
